For the past several years the AICPA has surveyed CPA decision-makers in executive functions about their views on the economy. The survey is conducted on a quarterly basis. Respondents to this survey include CPAs in public companies, private companies, government, not-for-profit organizations, and other organizations. In the most recent survey over half the respondents were either CFOs or CEOs of their organization. The survey is a barometer of the outlook of key decision-makers in our economy. Readers of this survey can gain insight as to whether these leaders will be letting out the sails in the expectation of clear sailing or battening down the hatches in preparation for stormy seas. Questions are asked about the decision-maker’s overall outlook for the economy, overall outlook for his or her organization, growth expectations and other projections and expectations as well as current challenges.
In 2008 the AICPA announced a partnership with UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School. The survey now contains both the economic outlook and a "survey within the survey" on current accounting issues.
