Higgins began his career in 1981 as a junior CPA doing tax and audit work with a local public accounting firm. When IBM computers were introduced in the early 80s, his career path took its turn toward technology, sparking a passionate drive to utilize effective technology solutions to improve business processes. Higgins has formed his own company twice. In 1984, he launched Computools, providing information technology solutions to hundreds of small and mid-sized businesses throughout Michigan. In four years, the organization grew to a team of 15 generating $1.2 million in annual revenue.
The success of Computools drew the attention of a top 10 national accounting and consulting firm, BDO Seidman, which ultimately bought Higgins' company and brought him on board to manage its mid-market IT consulting practice. When BDO divested from the consulting practice a few years later, he once again formed his own company, CPA Crossings, Rochester, Mich. CPA Crossings serves as a "virtual CIO" for small businesses offering guidance and advice on how to leverage the power of information technology to gain competitive advantage and increase profitability. He helps companies define where they want to be in the future and shows them how to get there in terms of organization structure, staffing, marketing and technology infrastructure.
